How do I replace a Toyota smart key battery?

For the RAV4 key in Toyota's manual: release the lock and slide out the mechanical key, remove the key cover with a flathead screwdriver wrapped in a rag, lift out the old battery with a small flathead screwdriver, fit a new CR2032 with the "+" side up, and reassemble. Toyota says you can do it yourself but recommends a Toyota dealer, since the key can be damaged.

Signs your Toyota key battery is low

Toyota lists these symptoms of a depleted electronic key battery:

  • The smart key system or the wireless remote control does not work properly
  • The operating range gets smaller
  • The LED indicator on the key does not turn on
  • On vehicles with a smart key system: "Key Battery Low Replace Key Battery" appears on the multi-information display

A discharged 12-volt vehicle battery is a different problem: Toyota's manual notes that the engine cannot be started using the smart key system when the vehicle battery is discharged. Our Toyota battery service page covers that.

How to replace the battery (smart key)

These are Toyota's steps for a RAV4 smart key:

  • Release the lock and remove the mechanical key.
  • Remove the key cover with a flathead screwdriver. Cover the tip with a rag, and do not force it; prying hard can damage the cover.
  • Remove the old battery with a small flathead screwdriver. If the electronic key module sticks to the cover and hides the battery, take the module out first.
  • Insert the new battery with the "+" terminal facing up.
  • Reassemble by reversing the steps.

Toyota's precautions: work with dry hands, do not touch or move any other part inside the key, and do not bend the battery terminals. Keep the old battery and small parts away from children, and dispose of used batteries according to local laws. Keys without a smart key system open differently; the RAV4 manual covers both.

If the key battery dies before you replace it

The mechanical key inside the fob locks and unlocks the doors. To start a RAV4 with a smart key system when the key battery is depleted, Toyota's manual says:

  • Put the shift lever in P and press the brake pedal.
  • Touch the Toyota emblem side of the electronic key to the engine switch. A buzzer sounds when the key is detected.
  • Firmly press the brake and check the multi-information display.
  • Press the engine switch shortly and firmly.

Toyota calls this a temporary measure and recommends replacing the key battery right away. If the engine still will not start, contact a Toyota dealer.

Help the key battery last

Mind the electronics

Toyota says to keep the electronic key at least 3 ft. (1 m) from TVs, personal computers, phones and chargers, table lamps and induction cookers.

Use battery-saving mode

If a key will sit unused for a long time, Toyota recommends setting it to battery-saving mode. The owner's manual has the steps.

Treat it gently

Do not drop, bend, soak or take apart the key, or leave it in high heat for long periods.

Toyota key fob battery FAQ

What battery does a Toyota key fob take?

The RAV4 Owner's Manual (OM0R024U) calls for a CR2032 lithium battery and says to replace it only with the same or an equivalent type. Other models can differ, so check your owner's manual or the old battery before you buy.

How do I know my Toyota key battery is low?

Toyota lists these signs: the smart key system or wireless remote does not work, the working range gets smaller, or the LED on the key does not light. Vehicles with a smart key system may also show "Key Battery Low Replace Key Battery" on the multi-information display.

How do I start my Toyota if the key battery is dead?

Per the RAV4 Owner's Manual: put the shift lever in P and press the brake, touch the Toyota emblem side of the key to the engine switch, wait for the buzzer, then press the engine switch shortly and firmly. Toyota calls this a temporary measure and says to replace the key battery right away.

Why does the key battery run down if I do not use the key?

Toyota explains that the electronic key is always receiving radio waves, so the battery drains even when the key is not used. Keeping the key at least 3 ft. from TVs, computers, phones and chargers helps, and a battery-saving mode is available for keys stored for long periods.

Can Peoria Toyota replace my key battery?

Yes. Toyota says you can do it yourself but recommends a Toyota dealer do it, because the key can be damaged. Our service team can replace it, and Toyota notes the battery is sold at Toyota dealers.
