How to Reset the Toyota Tire Pressure Light
Often the tire pressure light goes off once the tires are set to the right pressure. When you rotate or change tires, the system needs to be initialized. Here is what Toyota's own manuals say, read October 26, 2026.

How do I turn off the Toyota tire pressure light?
Let the tires cool, then set each one to the cold pressure on the door-jamb label. Toyota says the light should go off after a few minutes. If it stays on, check the pressures again and initialize the system from the Vehicle Settings menu on the multi-information display. If the light blinks for about a minute and then stays on, have the system inspected.
What the tire pressure light is telling you
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light comes on and stays on | Low tire inflation pressure in one or more tires | Stop in a safe place as soon as possible, check the tires and set the pressures |
| Light stays on after you set the pressures | Toyota says you probably have a flat tire | Check the tires; fit the spare and have the flat repaired |
| Light blinks for about 1 minute, then stays on | A possible malfunction in the tire pressure warning system | Have the vehicle inspected by a Toyota dealer |
| Light comes on after a temperature change | Natural air leaks or temperature changes | Set the pressures; the light goes off after a few minutes |
From the Toyota RAV4 Owner's Manual (OM0R024U) and Toyota's Warning Lights page, read October 26, 2026. Your owner's manual is the final word for your model.
Step one: set the pressures on cold tires
Toyota's RAV4 Owner's Manual tells you to wait until the tires have cooled, check the inflation pressure of each tire, and set them to the specified level. The specified cold pressures are on the tire and load information label on the door jamb, and in the owner's manual.
If the light came on because of natural air loss or a cold snap, that is usually all it takes. Toyota's manuals say the light goes off a few minutes after the pressures are corrected. Toyota recommends checking tire pressures every two weeks, or at least once a month, with the tires cold, including the spare if provided.
Step two: initialize the system (if the light stays on)
If the light does not go off after several minutes and the pressures are right, Toyota says to initialize the tire pressure warning system. Initialization sets the current pressures as the benchmark, so the tires must be cold and correctly inflated first. The menu names below are from the RAV4 Owner's Manual; your model may differ slightly.
- Park in a safe place and stop the engine. Initialization cannot be done while the vehicle is moving.
- Set every tire to the specified cold pressure.
- Turn the engine switch to ON (or start the engine on vehicles that show each tire's pressure).
- Use the meter control switches on the steering wheel to open the settings screen on the multi-information display, then select "Vehicle Settings".
- Select "TPWS", then "Set Pressure", and press and hold the select switch shown in your manual.
- The tire pressure warning light blinks 3 times and a "Setting Tire Pressure Warning System" message appears. When the message goes away, initialization is done.
On RAV4 models that show each tire's pressure on the display, Toyota says to stop the engine for 20 minutes or more first, then drive at about 25 mph or more for roughly 10 to 30 minutes after starting initialization; the pressures appear when it finishes. Toyota's 2025 Camry Quick Reference Guide uses "TPWS setting" and "Tire Pressure Setting", with a choice of setting by specified pressure or by current pressure.
If the light blinks, then stays on
A light that blinks for about 1 minute and then stays on is the system's malfunction signal, and Toyota says it repeats at each start until the problem is fixed. While it is on, the system may not be able to detect low pressure as intended.
The RAV4 Owner's Manual points to causes such as replacement or alternate tires or wheels that keep the system from working, new sensors whose ID codes have not been registered, or an initialization that did not finish. If the light did not blink 3 times when you started initialization, or it blinks for about a minute and then stays on after you drive for a while, Toyota says to repeat the procedure, and to have the vehicle inspected if repeated attempts fail.
When the system needs to be initialized
The RAV4 Owner's Manual lists three situations:
Tire rotation
After you rotate the tires, initialize the system with the tires cold and set to the specified pressure.
Changing a tire
After a tire is changed. A compact spare has no sensor, so the light stays on until the standard tire is back on.
New sensors
After new tire pressure warning valves and transmitters are fitted, their ID codes must be registered and the system initialized. On some models a Toyota dealer has to register them.

Toyota tire pressure light FAQ
Why is my Toyota tire pressure light on?
The light means one or more tires is low, or that the tire pressure warning system has a problem. Toyota's manuals note it can also come on from natural air leakage or pressure changes caused by temperature; in that case, setting the tires to the specified pressure turns it off after a few minutes.
Why is my tire pressure light blinking?
If the light blinks for about 1 minute and then stays on, Toyota says the tire pressure warning system may have a malfunction. Have the vehicle inspected by a Toyota dealer.
When do I need to initialize the tire pressure warning system?
The RAV4 Owner's Manual lists three times: when the tires are rotated, when a tire is changed, and after new sensor ID codes are registered. Initialize only after the tires are cold and set to the specified pressure.
Where do I find the right tire pressure for my Toyota?
On the tire and load information label on the door jamb, or in your owner's manual.
Will the light go off on a compact spare?
No. The RAV4 Owner's Manual explains that the compact spare has no tire pressure warning valve and transmitter, so the light stays on until the standard tire is back on and set to the right pressure.
