Toyota RAV4 Oil Type and Capacity

The right oil and the right amount for the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, straight from Toyota's owner's manuals and Warranty and Maintenance Guides, read November 2, 2026. If your RAV4 gets its oil changed with us on N. Allen Rd. in Peoria, this is the short version of what the manuals say.

What oil does a Toyota RAV4 take, and how much?

For the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota's owner's manuals call for JASO GLV-1 engine oil, SAE 0W-8. The 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid manual calls for ILSAC GF-6B oil, SAE 0W-16. Both use the 2.5-liter A25A-FXS engine, and a drain and refill takes about 4.5 qt. (4.3 L) with the oil filter, or 4.2 qt. (4.0 L) without it. Toyota calls these reference quantities, so finish by checking the dipstick.

Why the two RAV4s use different oil

The two 2026 RAV4 manuals list the same engine and the same oil quantities, but not the same oil. The RAV4 HV manuals say SAE 0W-8 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather; the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid manual says the same of SAE 0W-16. Use the oil listed in the manual for your version.

In both, the "0W" describes the oil's cold startability: a lower number before the W allows easier starting in cold weather. The number after it describes the oil's viscosity at high temperature.

Toyota says Toyota Genuine Motor Oil is used in the vehicle, and to use Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that satisfies the grade and viscosity listed. The RAV4 HV manuals point to the JASO GLV-1 mark on some oil containers; the Plug-in Hybrid manual points to the API registered mark.

How often to change the oil

From the 2026 RAV4 HV and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Warranty and Maintenance Guides:

Every 10,000 miles

The standard maintenance charts list replacing the engine oil and oil filter at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000 miles, and on through the charts.

Miles or months

Toyota recommends scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first, and the guides say to check the engine oil level once a month.

Tougher use

If you mainly drive on dirt or dusty roads; tow, use a car-top carrier or carry heavy loads; idle a lot or drive long distances at low speed; or make repeated trips of less than five miles below freezing (32°F), the guides list oil and filter replacement every 5,000 miles, and say 5,000 miles or six months.

Schedules are from Toyota's 2026 RAV4 HV and 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Warranty and Maintenance Guides, read November 2, 2026. The owner's manuals add that some oil is consumed while driving, so you may need to top up between oil changes.

How to check the oil level on a RAV4

The owner's manual says to check the oil on the dipstick with the engine at operating temperature and turned off:

  1. Park on level ground. After warming up the engine and turning off the hybrid system, wait about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine.
  2. Holding a rag under the end, pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean and reinsert it fully.
  3. Pull it out again, holding a rag under the end, and check that the oil level is above the low level mark.
  4. If the level is below or near the low level mark, add oil of the same type already in the engine with a clean funnel, keeping the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark, then install the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise.

The manual lists times when oil consumption may increase: when the engine is new, with low-quality oil or the wrong viscosity, at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, when towing, with frequent acceleration and deceleration, and with long idling or frequent heavy traffic. It also says repeated driving without the engine warmed up, such as short distances, low speeds or low outside temperatures, can raise the oil level on the dipstick; that is not a malfunction, but if the level is above the refill upper limit mark, contact your Toyota dealer.

Maintenance reminders, the low oil level message and the low oil pressure light

The 2026 RAV4 HV manual says "Maintenance Required Soon" comes on approximately 4,500 miles after the message has been reset, and "Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer" approximately 5,000 miles after. After the maintenance is performed, reset the message through "Scheduled Maintenance" in the multi-information display settings, using the meter control switch.

"Engine Oil Level Low Add or Replace" means the oil level may be low: check it and add oil if necessary. The manual notes it can appear when the vehicle is stopped on a slope, so move to a level surface and see if it clears.

The low engine oil pressure warning light, with a buzzer, means the engine oil pressure is too low. The manual says to immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

Toyota RAV4 oil FAQ

What oil does a 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid take?

Toyota's 2026 RAV4 HV owner's manuals call for oil that meets the JASO GLV-1 grade with a recommended viscosity of SAE 0W-8, using Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that meets that grade and viscosity. If 0W-8 is not available, SAE 0W-16 may be used, but it must be replaced with 0W-8 at the next oil change.

What oil does the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid take?

Its own owner's manual lists a different oil: ILSAC GF-6B multigrade engine oil, recommended viscosity SAE 0W-16. If 0W-16 is not available, SAE 0W-20 may be used, but it must be replaced with 0W-16 at the next oil change.

How much oil does a 2026 RAV4 hold?

All three 2026 RAV4 manuals (Hybrid through December 2025 production, Hybrid from January 2026 production, and Plug-in Hybrid) list 4.5 qt. (4.3 L) with the filter and 4.2 qt. (4.0 L) without it, for a drain and refill. Toyota calls these reference quantities: when you add oil, keep the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark on the dipstick.

Which engine is in the 2026 RAV4?

The manuals list a 2.5 L 4-cylinder gas engine (A25A-FXS) for both the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid.

How often should RAV4 oil be changed?

The 2026 RAV4 HV and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Warranty and Maintenance Guides list engine oil and oil filter replacement every 10,000 miles in their maintenance charts. If you mainly drive on dirt or dusty roads, tow, use a car-top carrier or carry heavy loads, idle a lot or drive long distances at low speed, or make repeated trips of less than five miles below freezing, the guides list it every 5,000 miles, and say 5,000 miles or six months.

Can I use 0W-20 in a RAV4 Hybrid?

The 2026 RAV4 HV manuals list SAE 0W-8 as recommended and SAE 0W-16 as the only fallback; they do not list 0W-20. SAE 0W-20 appears only in the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid manual, as its fallback.

Can Peoria Toyota change the oil in my RAV4?

Yes. Our service team in Peoria can change the oil and filter with oil that meets the grade and viscosity in your owner's manual and reset the maintenance reminder. See the service hours above or schedule online.
