2026 GR86 vs Camry fuel: minimum octane and the 91 fallback
U.S. 2026 GR86 and 2026 Camry from May 2026 production, using Toyota’s production-specific owner manuals.
If you want an 87-octane fuel routine, the checked Camry manual supports it; the GR86 manual does not. For GR86, plan around 93 for maximum performance. Toyota permits 91 when 93 is not readily available, with stated tradeoffs. That availability exception matters: calling 93 an absolute requirement misses it, while treating 87 as an acceptable GR86 fallback goes beyond the manual.

GR86: performance specification
93 octane /98 RON or higher. 91 /95 RON is permitted when 93 is not readily available, with stated performance and pinging tradeoffs.
Camry: minimum specification
87 octane /91 RON or higher in the checked from-May-2026 manual. Fuel below 87 risks knocking and engine damage.
Both: check the blend
Gasoline must contain no more than 15% ethanol. An acceptable octane number does not make E30, E50 or E85 acceptable.
What the octane numbers actually mean for these two cars
For the GR86, Toyota links 93 or higher to maximum engine performance. Its 91 exception preserves engine durability and driveability under the stated availability condition, but Toyota says maximum performance may decrease slightly and some pinging may occur. The manual does not give this exception a set number of tanks or days.
The Camry instruction is simpler: choose 87 or higher. Below 87 can produce knocking, and persistent knocking can damage the engine. Its governing instruction does not ask for 93 to reach a stated maximum-performance condition. Follow the car’s own rule rather than transferring the GR86 requirement to it.

| Model and manual scope | Octane rating instruction | Manual’s RON equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| GR86 | 93 or higher for maximum performance | 98 or higher |
| GR86, when 93 is not readily available | 91 allowed; slight maximum-performance loss and pinging possible | 95 |
| Camry, from May 2026 production | 87 or higher; below 87 may cause knocking and damage | 91 or higher |
Check the blend as well as the grade
An acceptable octane rating does not override the ethanol limit. Both manuals allow gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol and rule out blends above that, including E30, E50 and E85. The GR86’s gasohol still needs at least 91; the Camry’s needs at least 87. Both also advise against gasoline containing methanol or MMT.
Keep the two numbering conventions separate when reading fuel information. Toyota pairs GR86’s 91 rating with 95 RON; Camry’s 87 rating pairs with 91 RON. Seeing “91” somewhere in a specification is not enough to choose the correct fuel—read which scale that number belongs to.
The 91 exception is not a reason to ignore new symptoms
For GR86, Toyota distinguishes occasional brief, light knocking during acceleration or uphill driving from fuel-related problems. It advises consulting a Toyota dealer if the engine knocks and discontinuing a different fuel type if it causes poor driveability. A continuing problem should not be waved away simply because 91 appears in the manual.
Bring the fuel rule into your shortlist before choosing a car: can you plan around GR86’s 93 specification and its availability-based 91 exception, or does Camry’s 87 minimum suit your routine? Ask Peoria Toyota to confirm the manual edition for the specific vehicle you are considering.
