New 2016 Toyota Tacoma at Peoria Toyota Scion for Peoria, IL

The Toyota Tacoma is an extremely popular pickup truck. It is so popular in fact that half the mid-size trucks purchased in the United States are Tacomas.  The reputation that Tacoma owns is solidly built on reliability, capability and a tough demeanor.  For 2016 fuel efficiency has been improved, noise levels in the cabin have been dampened and new styling has been added.  What continues is amazing versatility, off-road capability that has been proven and best-in-class payload.  For 2016 there are two cabs, two engines, two bed lengths, better maneuverability and either 2 or 4-wheel drive to choose from. There is such a great fan base that even early models of the Tacoma hold resale value quite well.  The Toyota Tacoma is a predictably solid vehicle.

Under the Tacoma's Hood

The 2016 Tacoma has two available powertrain options.  The base level is a 2.7-liter inline 4 cylinder grabbing 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque and getting gas mileage anywhere from 19 to 23 miles per gallon. The other option is a great 3.5-liter V-6 producing 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque significantly more power than the base engine.  This setup gets anywhere from 18 to 24 miles per gallon depending on transmission and drivetrain.  You can get either engine with the Access Cab (extended cab) or Double Cab (4-door) models, but if you want a manual transmission, that's only offered in the 4-wheel-drive trucks.

Design of Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma has been completely redone on the inside for 2016 using higher quality materials.  It has gotten new seats, push button start an optional moon roof and a very useful multi-information gauge.  The redesigned Tacoma also comes with a new version of Entune which is the popular entertainment and connectivity control center and wireless charging.  The exterior of the Tacoma has changed quite a bit but you can still certainly tell it is a Tacoma.  There has been LED daytime running lights added.  There are also several levels of trim available including:  SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited - each of which gets different front-end styling.  The truck bed is composite lined and there is ample storage room.  For truck bed options there are: Short Bed (60.5-inch, or five-foot) and Long Bed (73.7-inch, or six-foot) versions of the Double Cab, while Access Cab versions are only offered with the Short Bed. Bed depth is 19.1 inches for all versions, while tailgate-limited bed depth shortens from 53.4 inches to 41.5 inches between the wheel wells.

Another reason why so many love and celebrate the Tacoma is that for extra peace of mind it has a great deal of safety equipment to help you and passengers be secure through all situations.  The Tacoma has anti-lock brakes with the rear brakes being of the drum variety which help with functioning during grit and grim conditions.  Limited models get a rear parking assist (sonar) system that's also optional on all but base SR models. A Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Assist uses rear radar sensors and is also included in the Limited and optional in the TRD models. The Cross Traffic system operates when the vehicle is being reversed at up to 15 mph and will warn of vehicles moving 5 to 18 mph.  The Tacoma also uses A-TRAC control system which helps move power to where it is needed, Hill descent control and Trailer Sway control.  Tacoma is fit with 8 airbags coming standard on all models along with active headrests for the front row as well. The vehicle has also been redesigned this year and uses more ultra-high strength steel helping to make the vehicle stronger and resistant damage caused by crashes.
